What's Happening On Whidbey Island?

Whidbey Island real estate isn't all we know.
There's usually a lot going on here on the Island! Some activities are Pacific Northwest
or calendar seasonal, some recurring weekly or monthly, but all can be of interest if you live here or are just visiting. Here are just a few of the fun and facinating happenings on Whidbey. There are plays, lectures, art shows, field trips, games, dances, recreational activities, dinners, and concerts. There are even storytimes, guest speakers, and activities for all ages at our Sno-Isle Libraries (click on the link to see a full calendar of Sno-Isle activities). Our heartfelt thanks to our friends at Whidbey Marketplace for compiling
some of the list. If we've missed a few, we apologize--there's just SO much to do, we can't name them all.

(These events are not necessarily in calendar order, so don't miss any!)

PEARL DJANGO
May 1
with Connie Evingson
Whidbey Island Center for the Arts
7:30 pm
$20 all seats
That is what Connie Evingson says draws her to the style known as Gypsy swing and that is what she and Pearl Django are going to bring to Whidbey Island . Evingson’s creative take on the genre as well as her silky vocal phrasing and an indelible sense of swing is making her a celebrity outside of Minneapolis , Minnesota , where she’s based. She has appeared in clubs and concert halls across the United States , Europe and Japan ; performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and the Toronto Symphony conducted by Doc Severinsen, and the Vocalessence Music Series with Bobby McFerrin; created the original stage production, Fever, A Tribute to Peggy Lee and has released seven CDs on Minnehaha Music. She was featured on the Smithsonian's "Jazz Singers" radio series, and on a number of compilation discs including Jazziz Magazine's Vocals on Fire and Sharper Image's New Sirens of Song along with Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Stacy Kent. Gypsy in My Soul, which features Pearl Django, was in the Top 50 of the Jazzweek chart for 10 weeks and the Top 20 for 4, reaching No. 8. Her latest release Stockholm Sweetnin' charted for 8 weeks in the top 50.
Hot club jazz, or Gypsy swing was born in the exciting and romantic cabaret society of Paris in the mid-1930s. Pioneered and made popular by the brilliant gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and the inspired French violinist Stephane Grappelli, the style has enjoyed a renaissance in both Europe and America in the last decade and Modern Hot Records recording artists Pearl Django have happily been a major player in the western world’s rediscovery of this exciting music. They have become a mainstay on the vibrant international Gypsy jazz scene and remain in demand in the Pacific Northwest and at festivals around the world.
